BtVS 5x07 "Fool for Love" Picspam/Lovefest

Fool for Love is one of my favorite Buffy the Vampire Slayer episodes ever. This is mostly because I’m a big Spike fan. Soul or no soul, with or without the chip, I’ve loved Spike since he first appeared in School Hard. For me he doesn’t need to be with Buffy, I like him fine on his own or whoever he’s with or wanting to be with. Spike’s capacity for love despite being a soulless vampire is one of my favorite things about him. It’s no surprise really that Fool for Love would be one of my favorite episodes.

Here are some of my favorite things about this episode…

Picspam, commentary and quoted dialogue under the cut….

I love how we get to see Spike love throughout his history starting with Cecily back in 1880 when he’s still William and ending with Buffy in the present day of the episode. We also see him with Drusilla both in happy days and not so happy days when she’s fooling around with the Chaos demon.

drusilla, spike and the chaos demon

I love how we get to see Spike’s origins. We see William and hear his poetry. We get the background on why he was called “William the bloody” and we see him strike out with Cecily.

william and cecily

Spike/William: “I know I’m a bad poet, but I’m a good man.”
Cecily: “You’re nothing to me William. You’re beneath me.”

And that we get to see Drusilla meeting William for the first time and we get to see her give him the bite that will be the first step in turning him into a vampire.

drusilla

Drusilla: “And I wonder what possible catastrophe came crashing down from heaven and brought this dashing stranger to tears?”

William/Spike: “Nothing. I wish to be alone.”

Drusilla: “Oh, I see you. A man surrounded by fools who cannot see his strength..his vision…his glory. That and burning baby fish swimming all around your head.”

And before she bites him she tells him, “You walk in worlds, the others can’t even begin to imagine.”

Oh man, I love Drusilla. She’s so awesome and has some great lines.

Then there is the scene where Spike and Angelus are fighting and Drusilla and Darla are enjoying the show…

Drusilla and Darla

Darla: “I think our boys are going to fight.
Drusilla: “The King of cups expects a picnic…but this is not his birthday.
Darla: “Good point.”

And all the great flashback bits with Spike and Dru…

As well as the whole gang…

Buffy and Spike at the Bronze negotiating is awesome...

spike and buffy at the bronze

Buffy: “Tell the tale, you get the cash.”
Spike: “Right. You want to learn all about how I bested the slayers, and you want to learn fast. Right, then. We fought. I won. The end. Pay up.”

Buffy: “That’s not what I--”
Spike: “What did you want, eh? A quick demo, blow-for-blow description you can map out and memorize? It’s not about the moves love.”

Spike and Buffy inside and later outside the Bronze is what frames much of this episode. Much of the story switches between them in the present day at the Bronze with Spike telling her his story and the flashbacks of the past when these stories take place. The episode picks up speed when Spike tells the tale of the second slayer he killed and it begins to cut back and forth between the Bronze in the now and the fight with the slayer in 1977 at an accelerated pace with Spike in the flashback speaking to Buffy in the present by the end.

1977 spike

Buffy: “You think we’re dancing?”
Spike: “That’s all we’ve ever done.. The only thing about the dance is you never get to stop. Everyday you wake up, it’s the same bloody question that haunts you. Is today the day I die? Death is on your heels, baby and sooner or later, it’s gonna catch you. And part of you wants it. Not only to stop the fear and uncertainty but because you’re just a little bit in love with it.”

But Spike is a vampire without a soul and while he has the capacity for love and does it with a vengeance, he’s also not a very nice person a lot of the time and what he tells Buffy doesn’t maker her happy and when he puts the moves on her she pushes him away and to the ground and throws the money she promised him at him.

spike on the ground

Buffy: “It wouldn’t be you Spike. It would never be you. You’re beneath me.”

Of course this echoes what Cecily told him when he professed his feelings for her back in 1880 and it hurts and humiliates him to have Buffy say the same words to him. He ends up in tears again and then the hurt turns to anger and plans for murderous revenge.

Back at his place Harmony tries talking some sense into Spike. But he doesn’t listen and he heads to the Summers’ house with a shotgun but when he gets there Buffy’s crying after having just learned that her mother has to go into the hospital for tests overnight and that it might not be nothing.

He puts down the gun and sits with her.

fool for love end scene. buffy and spike

I love that scene. He could have killed her there. Sure it would have hurt like he said but he could have done it and with her injured physically and hurting emotionally I’m not sure if she could have or would have reacted quick enough to survive. But when he sees her face, he can’t. His love for her seems to over power his anger and hate even though he’s a soulless monster.

This is my favorite episode. So much story packed into the 40-some minutes. Lovely caps.

I also liked how they showed that Riley was a fool for love, going into the vampire nest alone. Poor fool.

This is by far one of my most favorite episodes - b/c of the journey of Spike - to me, the final scene - tells me everything I need to know about Spike - he doesn't need his soul to care about Buffy - he does it anyway. Great write up :D
